Job Description

Prepare histologic slides from human tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist. 


Major

  • Prepares sections of human tissue for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis, using techniques to gross, embed, section/ microtomy, stain and mount tissue from surgical procedures.
  • Examines slides and/or blocks to ensure tissue preparation is meeting laboratory requirements.
  • Exercises independent judgment in dealing with procedural and technical problems.
  • Trains or directs Laboratory Assistants and Histology Technicians engaged in laboratory testing and processing techniques.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality.

·         Complies with all departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.

 

Regular

  • A Receiving of Histopathology and Cytology specimen according to SOPs.
  • Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
  • Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Prepare slides and blocks of cytology specimens and stain them as per SOPs.

Periodic

  • Performs grossing of small specimens and fixes the large specimen under supervision. Assists the pathologist in grossing of large specimen.

Disposal of hazardous chemical waste as per regulatory guidelines.  

  • Label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes and/or slides, affixes coverslip to slides.
  • Files, retrieves and distribute blocks, slides and pathology reports.

Teaching of students and orientation of new personnel.

  • Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, equipment, and testing to monitor control checks.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications.
  • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral, and written instruction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
