Job Description

Responsible for the leadership, communication and team working within the section, providing advice to the Clinical Director on specialty issues. This includes accountability for all aspects of clinical governance, including quality assurance and accreditation, and development of services.

Expected to contribute substantially to teaching as an integral and essential component of clinical practice. Leads or participates actively as a member of departmental / external hospital committees pertaining to clinical care. Actively participates in audit and collaborative research activities including research dissemination and advocacy. Implement & monitor the quality control, quality assurance protocols, and record-keeping procedures which constitute good laboratory practice, and which comply with regulations imposed by agencies such as JCIA or CAP & Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

Independent sign out of difficult cases and clinico-pathologic advice to the clinicians regarding abnormal results.

SERVICE:

  • Ensure drafting and implementation of SOP’s, guidelines, policies etc.
  • Ensure internal and external quality control of all tests
  • Supervises junior medical staff (Registrars and Residents) including assessment of staff performance in relation to clinical competence, adherence to departmental protocols, timely and accurate documentation, communication with patients, relatives, and peers, other staff and doctors in other hospitals and in the community.
  • Acquire extensive knowledge of advanced laboratory theory, techniques, and testing related to Microbiology.
  • Supervision of reporting of all test performed in Microbiology.
  • Trouble shooting of difficult /discordant cases.
  • Clinical interaction with patient care service by providing consultation /advice to clinical.
  • Development of antibiograms to guide empirical therapy.
  • Monitor KPI of Microbiology laboratory.
  • Monitor data shared by the lab.
  • Selected antimicrobial reporting according to CLSI/EUCAST guidelines.
  • Participates in departmental and other meetings required to meet organizational and service objectives.
  • Acquire knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures.
  • Perform costing of all tests.
  • Perform feasibility of new tests.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM:

  • Contribute to the development of Residency program manual.
  • Attends Medical education workshops designed for structuring residency program.
  • Ensure that training standards are maintained in specialty and raise matters of importance or concern as required.
  • Provides effective and responsive leadership and direction for the PGME committee, communicate effectively with members of the Committee and ensure coordinated and integrated delivery of developments and strategy for/within the specialty
  • Liaise on with the College of Physicians and Surgeons to ensure training matters are represented in discussions

ACADEMICS

  • Actively participates in Academic activities and research.
  • Participate in continuing educational activities (CME) of the department and organization.
  • Participates in teaching programs for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees (Residents).
  • Participate in undergraduate and post graduate teaching programs of medical lab technology programs.
  • Supervises, guides and teaches technical, allied health and other support staff.
  • Organizes and participates in departmental academic activities.
  • Participates in formal and informal education in clinical setting.
  • Participates in professional continuing educational activities, regular performance review and maintains and updates own knowledge and skills.

RESEARCH AND AUDIT

  • Participates in departmental audits.
  • Participates in research and actively promotes research activities.
  • Involves in intradepartmental research projects with residents and registrars in the sections.
  • Actively participates in inter-departmental research projects with fellows and residents of other departments.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Supervises and reports proficiency testing surveys.
  • Any other task assigned by the hospital management.
