Job Description

Responsible for the leadership, communication and team working within the section. This includes accountability for all aspects of clinical governance, including quality assurance and accreditation, and development of services.

Expected to contribute substantially to teaching as an integral and essential component of clinical practice. Leads or participates actively as a member of departmental / external hospital committees pertaining to clinical care.  Actively participates in audit.  Implement & monitor the quality control, quality assurance protocols, and record-keeping procedures which constitute good laboratory practice, and which comply with regulations imposed by agencies such as JCIA or CAP & Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

Independent sign out of difficult cases and clinico-pathologic advice to the clinicians regarding abnormal results.

SERVICE:

  • Ensure drafting and implementation of SOP’s
  • Ensure internal and external quality control of all tests.
  • Supervises staff, including assessment of staff performance in relation to clinical / practical competence, adherence to departmental protocols, timely and accurate documentation, communication with patients, relatives, and peers, other staff and doctors in other hospitals and in the community.
  • Acquire extensive knowledge of advanced laboratory theory, techniques, and testing related to hematology and transfusion medicine.
  • Participates in departmental and other meetings required to meet organizational and service objectives.
  • Acquire knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures.
  • Perform costing of all tests.
  • Perform feasibility of new tests.
  • Ensure proper test utilization and inventory management
  • Ensuring appropriate training and development of technical staff.

ACADEMICS

  • Participate in continuing educational activities (CME) of the department and organization.
  • Actively participates in academic activities and research.
  • Participate in undergraduate and post graduate teaching programs of medical lab technology programs.
  • Supervises, guides and teaches technical, allied health and other support staff.
  • Organizes and participates in departmental academic activities.
  • Participates in formal and informal education in clinical setting.
  • Participates in professional continuing educational activities, regular performance review and maintains and updates own knowledge and skills.

RESEARCH AND AUDIT

  • Participates in departmental audits.
  • Participates in research and actively promotes research activities.
  • Actively participates in inter-departmental research projects with fellows of other departments.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Proficiency testing, ordering and result review with corrective action.
  • Supervises and reports proficiency testing surveys.
